The Santa Fe New Mexican reported that the state attorney general’s office had announced the reason for the delays of Sheryl Williams Stapleton’s trial due to changes in judge assignments, as three judges have rescued themselves from the case. Sheryl Williams Stapleton was accused of diverting money from vocational education at Albuquerque Public Schools to businesses and charities in which she was interested. She was also accused of using her legislative position for personal benefit.

However, Sheryl Williams Stapleton denied all allegations against her. In July 2021 Stapleton resigned from the Legislature and was fired soon after by the school district, US News reported.

The accusation raised questions regarding how the state’s largest school district was managing the federal funds. State officials demanded the community use a third-party auditor and train staff on a new set of fraud and waste safeguards.

Authorities have been investigating for months with Sheryl Williams Stapleton’s activities at the school district after problems were raised that she allegedly had been funneling funds to personal or business-related accounts through a kickback scheme.

The investigation primarily focused on the connection between her and the Robotics Management Learning System LLC locates in Washington DC which had been supplying online learning materials to the school district.

Robotics Management was discovered to have merely listed a post office box in Albuquerque and to not have a registered firm in New Mexico.

Williams Stapleton’s home and office were searched by state investigators, who also obtained documents from the school district system under oath. Federal investigators were later involved in the case, with FBI agents seizing $3 million they said was linked with the case.
