YouTube Star Faces Federal Charges After Reckless Stunt

Authorities began investigating after the video appeared online leading them to find behind-the-scenes footage where Choi discussed how he planned and directed the dangerous act. In this footage Choi thanked a camera company for helping with his crazy stupid idea and admitted to not obtaining the necessary permits for using fireworks on an aircraft. The video also showed Choi holding a firework near the helicopter increasing the risks involved. Prosecutors believe Choi bought the fireworks in Nevada where they are legal and then transported them to California where such fireworks are illegal adding another layer of legal trouble.

On June 5 Choi was arrested and charged with causing the placement of an explosive or incendiary device on an aircraft. This is a serious crime that could result in up to 10 years in federal prison if he is found guilty. The case has drawn significant attention due to Choi’s reckless actions and his large following on YouTube where he is known for performing extreme stunts to gain views. The incident raises important questions about the lengths to which content creators will go for popularity and the need for better safety and legal considerations in the pursuit of social media fame.
