On February 10, Nicholas Firkus, 39, was convicted of first-degree murder and second-degree murder for the death of his wife Heidi Firkus, then 25, on April 25, 2010. Nicholas reportedly killed Heidi with a shotgun the night before they were going to be kicked out of their house in St. Paul, Minnesota due to foreclosure.

An article on the AP News states that Nicholas’ defense team claimed that the shooting incident was accidental because of an intruder who allegedly broke into the Firkuses’ house. Nicholas reportedly told the authorities that he and the intruder wrestled over a firearm. This firearm allegedly went off twice and hit Nicholas in the leg, while hitting Heidi in her back. Nicholas suffered from a gunshot wound in his groin and upper-left thigh. Unfortunately, Heidi died at the scene.

Motive of the Murder

According to Kalmbacher, after a trial that lasted for 11 days, the jurors in Ramsey County rejected Nicholas’ narrative. This is because the prosecutors believe that losing their home and their accumulating financial problems have turned Nicholas desperate and ashamed. Ramsey County Attorney John J. Choi announced that the couple had an REI credit card and a bank account with an outstanding balance of $17,381.66 and late mortgage payments for 22 months.
