Come the new year, Hawaii will witness an increase in its minimum wage, rising to $14 per hour from January 1, 2024. The change is in accordance with Act 114, Session Laws of Hawaii (2022), which outlines a phased approach, targeting $16 per hour by January 1, 2026, and $18 per hour by January 1, 2028. The Department of Labor and Industrial Relations (DLIR) emphasizes that this adjustment is aimed at safeguarding the welfare and financial security of workers.

Incremental Progress for Worker Well-Being

Act 114, Session Laws of Hawaii (2022), orchestrates a phased increase in the minimum wage, emphasizing the commitment to enhance the livelihoods of the workforce.

DLIR Director Jade T. Butay underscores that the minimum wage serves as a protective foundation against unreasonably low pay, contributing to the overall health and efficiency of workers.

Tipped Employees Also Benefit

In tandem with the minimum wage hike, the tip credit for employees will see an increment from January 1, 2024.

Tipped employees may be paid $1.25 below the minimum wage, rising to $1.50 below from January 1, 2028. The DLIR ensures that employers can apply tip credits, provided the total income (employer contribution and tips) is $7.00 more than the minimum wage.
