Even smaller towns such as the state’s most dangerous city with just 11,000 residents are not spared from this wave of crime. Factors like job scarcity, minimal wages and the flat terrain contributing to idleness might be fueling this crisis. While Iowa isn’t in the top ten most dangerous states the alarming crime statistics reveal a pressing need for potential measures like increased police presence to ensure safety in these unexpectedly dangerous areas.

Most Dangerous Cities in Iowa

Fort Madison

Fort Madison with its population of 10,239 is considered the tenth most dangerous city in Iowa. The city reported 625 violent crimes per 100,000 Americans and 2,314 property crimes per 100,000 Americans and contributing to its position on the list.

Waterloo

Waterloo with a population of 67,200 is identified as the ninth most dangerous city in Iowa. The city’s crime statistics include 623 violent crimes per 100,000 Americans and 2,556 property crimes per 100,000 Americans highlighting significant safety concerns.

Keokuk

Keokuk situated at the intersection of three states and with a population of 10,091 holds the eighth spot among Iowa’s most dangerous cities. The city experienced 673 violent crimes per 100,000 Americans and 2,447 property crimes per 100,000 Americans.

Burlington

With 24,622 residents Burlington is a city in the southeast of the state and is rated as the eighth most hazardous in Iowa. The city stands out for having a high rate of property crimes with 3,500 per 100,000 residents and 491 violent crimes per 100,000 residents.

Sioux City

Sioux City, home to 82,628 residents is noted for its high property crime rate placing it seventh in the state for property crimes. The city reported 577 violent crimes per 100,000 Americans and 3,245 property crimes per 100,000 Americans.

Des Moines

With a population of 215,290 Des Moines is the capital and largest city of Iowa and it is known for having a high crime rate. Given its serious crime problems the city reported 3,901 property crimes and 704 violent crimes per 100,000 Americans.
