Man Accused of Fatal Shooting at Sugar Creek Apartments in Independence
Details of Planned Meeting and Fatal Encounter
According to The Kansas City Star, Antonio Catalan-Sharr a 23-year-old from Kansas City is accused of fatally shooting 20-year-old Donnie M. Kirkland Jr. at the Sugar Creek Apartments in Independence on June 5. The shooting occurred during a daytime encounter in the apartment complex’s parking lot. Kirkland was found injured but conscious by Independence police around 12:50 p.m. He was taken to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
Court documents indicate that Catalan-Sharr and Kirkland had planned to meet at the apartment complex where Kirkland intended to sell a firearm to Catalan-Sharr. Surveillance footage and witness accounts provided a detailed sequence of events leading to the shooting, capturing their interactions from a red Jeep just before the fatal incident. A search warrant executed on the Jeep later located in Kansas City, Kansas revealed critical evidence tying Catalan-Sharr to the crime scene. This evidence included ammunition matching the fatal bullet and personal items belonging to Kirkland found in the vehicle.

Antonio Catalan-Sharr remains detained at the Jackson County Detention Center on a $250,000 cash bond as legal proceedings continue. Kirkland’s death marked the ninth homicide reported in Independence in 2024 shedding light on ongoing concerns surrounding gun violence within the community.
