Families Notified of Findings in Abbey Gate Bombing Investigation

According to Task and Purpose, the U.S. military has finished looking into the 2021 Abbey Gate bombing during the Afghanistan withdrawal. They’re now telling the families of the service members who died in the attack about what they found. The Abbey Gate bombing happened at Kabul airport on August 26, 2021, and was done by ISIS-Khorasan Province or ISIS-K. It killed 13 American service members and around 170 Afghan civilians. The military’s first investigation said they couldn’t have stopped the attack but this new review wanted to learn more by talking to witnesses and checking what happened before the bombing.

Review Outcomes Shared with Defense Officials and Families

The review focused on three main things: if soldiers saw the suicide bomber before the Abbey Gate bombing attack, and if ISIS-K practiced the Abbey Gate bombing attack before doing it. The conclusions and suggestions from the review are now shared with top Department of Defense officials. The review being finished and the details being shared with Gold Star families happened while Congress asked military leaders about the Abbey Gate bombing attack and the withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021. Even though they’re trying to understand what happened the military wants to help the families who lost loved ones and asks everyone to respect their privacy.
