U.S. Commerce Secretary Discusses Export Controls With Minister of Commerce During China Visit

U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo discussed export controls with the Chinese Minister of Commerce during her visit to the country. Reports say both secretaries worked together about trade issues and improved the communications between the countries.

On August 28, U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo met with her Chinese counterpart, Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao, in the city of Beijing during her visit to China. Reports say the U.S. Commerce Secretary attempted to limit the scope of export controls and investment restrictions by maintaining that trade is not associated with national security.

According to Callanan, the U.S. Commerce Secretary attempted to increase the exports of items such as entertainment, health and beauty, and agricultural products to China as an outcome of the meetings.  This is because the U.S. uses export controls and investment restrictions to prohibit China with advanced technology.

U.S. Commerce Secretary’s Visit

According to McDonald, prior to the U.S. Commerce Secretary’s visit to China, 27 Chinese companies were removed from a blacklist that limited access to U.S. technology. This suggests that the country needs the meeting to increase cooperation and diminish tensions with China. Correspondingly, China is also eager to re-establish its international investments amidst the country’s economic downturn.
