On May 4, the Alabama Senate Committee has approved 2023 Tax Rebates worth $100 for most of the state’s tax filers. The total of $275 million is reportedly intended for a supplemental budget for education. Unfortunately, the approved amount is $300 less than what was initially proposed by Governor Kay Ivy.

According to Johnson, the budget for 2023 Tax Rebates amounted to a total of $275 million from $1 billion. This budget comes from the $2.8 billion worth of spending package that is still in discussion during Alabama’s legislative session. However, the distribution of the tax rebates must still be voted by the state’s legislature and signed into law before it can take effect.

Approved Budget Apart From 2023 Tax Rebates

According to Taylor, the $2.8 billion worth of spending package is an amended legislation for K-12 schools, four-year and community colleges, and other miscellaneous projects. However, unlike the 2023 Tax Rebates for education, allocations for healthcare science schools in the city of Demopolis and a $25 million budget for the economic development of Montgomery County were excluded from the approval.

In addition, the $5 million budget for the World Games in Birmingham and the $31 million budget for the relocation of commercial airline operations to the Mobile Downtown Airport were also excluded from the approval. On the contrary, the $100 million budget for the prison construction in the counties of Elmore and Escambia and the $500,000 budget for the feasibility study about residency programs for healthcare services in rural Alabama were approved.
