On March 31, former Attorney General Bill Barr states that he suspects Democrats are pushing for the Trump indictment with the intention that it will sabotage his and the Republicans’ chances in the 2024 elections. Nonetheless, Barr generally dismissed the idea that the indictment is politically influenced.According to Herlihy, Barr added that the sabotage will be a typical abuse from the prosecution if they would engage in dirty politics. The Trump indictment would be damaging to the Republicans because Barr thinks that it is a no-lose situation for the Democrats.
What Happened to Trump Indictment?
An article on Politico states that the Trump indictment happened after Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg investigated the former U.S. President for the hush money he had made for the 2016 presidential elections.
Reports say $150,000 worth of hush money payment was made to former Playboy model Karen McDougal and $130,000 was given to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. However, in 2019, federal prosecutors of the Southern District of New York abstained from charging Trump and in 2021, the Federal Election Commission also discarded its investigations of the matter.
Furthermore, Trump had also constantly denied any misconduct to the payments made to McDougal and Daniels. The former U.S. President insists that the payments were “simple private transactions” and “not a campaign violations”.
