In 2021, Waseem Awawdeh, 24, allegedly beat, punched, kicked with crutches, and pepper-sprayed Joseph Borgen, 29, near Broadway and West 49th Street. Awawdeh faced charges of criminal possession of a weapon, assault as a hate crime, aggravated harassment as a hate crime, and gang assault. If convicted, Awawdeh will be sentenced to a maximum of seven years in prison. However, despite all the charges, a prosecutor at Awawdeh’s arraignment in Manhattan Criminal Court states Awawdeh said he would “do it again” if he could.

According to Richard, other suspects identified as Mahmoud Musa, Faisal Elezzi, and Mohammed Othman were also charged in the assault. Borgen stated his experience saying he suffered from a concussion, had injuries on his arm, and was sore all over his body. However, the pepper spray on his face felt the worst of them all.
