Results of Multi-National Collaboration: German Police, Bulgarian Authorities, Romanian Border Police, and Europol Work Together to Dismantle Migrant Smuggling Ring
Expert Smuggling Strategies Found: Vulnerable Migrants Are Exploited by Organized Crime Groups Using Truck Concealment Across Several Borders and Boat Crossings
According to the Eurasia Review report, A cooperative endeavor spearheaded by the Romanian Border Police, with backing from Europol, has effectively disassembled an organized criminal organization involved in the transnational smuggling of migrants. A complex network mostly made up of Romanian, Iraqi, and Bangladeshi nationals was discovered during this cross-border investigation, which also included assistance from the German Police and the Bulgarian General Directorate Combating Organized Crime. Operating since the start of 2023, the organization took advantage of desperate Middle Eastern migrants who were trying to reach Germany and other parts of Western Europe. Using a two-stage smuggling operation, the thieves first carried migrants from Bulgaria to Romania by boat across the Danube. They then secretly moved them across western Romania until they managed to smuggle them over the border into Hungary hidden within trucks loaded with cargo.
