San Antonio’s Fresh Food Solution: Double Up Food Bucks Program
Eating Healthy on a Budget: How Double Up Food Bucks Helps San Antonians
According to sanantonioreport, San Antonio has a new program to help people buy healthy food. It’s called Double Up Food Bucks. This program helps Americans who use food stamps to buy fruits and vegetables. At Chicho Boys Fruit Market, the first store to have this program, customers can get 50% off fresh produce like strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries. Venessa Garcia, a customer at Chicho Boys, likes this program because it saves her money on her groceries.
The Double Up Food Bucks program helps people who don’t have a lot of money to buy healthy food. It also helps local farmers who grow the food. “It stretches their dollars and creates access to quality food,” said Jamie Gonzalez-Stevens, a coordinator at Chicho Boys. Since the program started, people have been buying more fruits and vegetables with their food stamps.

Ensuring Every Neighborhood Has a Healthy Grocery Option
The city is working on a plan to make sure everyone in San Antonio has access to healthy food. This plan includes surveys, workshops, and programs to help local farmers grow food. Some city officials want to work with big stores like H-E-B and Walmart to open grocery stores in neighborhoods that need them. People are excited about this new program and hope it will help make healthy food more affordable for everyone in San Antonio.
