Education Department Forgives Loans for 317,000 Art Institute Students Over Exaggerated Job Prospects
According to Kansas City, The Biden administration is helping former students of The Art Institutes by erasing $6.1 billion in student debt. This is because these students were misled about their job prospects and salaries after graduation. The Education Department found that the Art Institutes exaggerated how many students got jobs in their field of study and how much they earned. Now the government is forgiving the debt of 317,000 former Art Institute students who attended between 2004 and 2017.
The Education Department will contact eligible borrowers and stop their loan payments. They will also give back any money these borrowers have already paid. The Art Institutes had campuses all over the country, but many have closed. The Department found that the Art Institutes were not giving students the support they needed to find good jobs after graduation. This left many students with a lot of debt and few job opportunities.
