Chairman Mendelson Considers Lawsuit Against Mayor Bowser Over SNAP Funding Dispute

Chairman Phil Mendelson is considering suing Mayor Muriel Bowser for refusing to boost food aid programs for District residents. The resolution enables the General Counsel to sue the Council for failing to release monies as appropriated.

The dispute concerns $40 million in financing for over 145,000 D.C. SNAP recipients. The March “Give SNAP a Raise” bill sought to increase payments by 10% from January to September. Mendelson emphasizes the separation of powers and the council’s goal to increase SNAP benefits when revenues allow.

Mendelson hopes to resolve the issue with the mayor, but legal action is possible. Another D.C. Council member, Robert White, supports the measure, citing the mayor’s lawlessness and the need to enhance SNAP assistance.
