Allan Baltz, a sixth-grader, was named as one of the finalists in the USA Mullet Championship. Baltz has promised that if he wins, he will donate the prize money to foster care.
Baltz, from Jonesboro, was adopted out of foster care in September 2015, along with his twin sister by Derek and Lesli Baltz.
Baltz said in an interview, “I know I’m one of the really lucky ones because I have a great mom and dad who adopted me, and I want to be able to help other kids who are looking for forever homes.”
He is one of the remaining 25 finalists in the children’s division. The child who receives the most votes will get a $2,500 reward, which Baltz has promised he will gladly donate to non-profit organizations that assist foster families and foster kids, primarily in the state.
Lesli Baltz, Allan’s mother, expressed how proud they are of their little boy, “Whether we or not we take home the prize, our hearts have certainly been warmed by the dozens of people who have shared our story and helped our pursuit of this tremendous cause.”
The 6th grader first started donning the mullet in Spring 2020, when he was trapped at home with his family due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The USA Mullet Championship
When Kevin Begole, a small company owner, noticed an increase in mullet haircuts during the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, he decided to feature them in a local competition, the USA Mullet Championship.
A child must submit a front and side shot of their mullet to join the competition, with a $10 registration fee. The fee is split in half and donated to charity. The charity of choice for the adult tournament is an organization dedicated to assisting veterans. The money raised for children’s causes will benefit a local pediatric hospital.
“We’re trying to make it fun,” said Begole, comparing the process to a cross between “American Idol” and a sports competition. “The cool thing is it’s cut through politics, it’s cut through COVID. People love it, and some of these kids are super-empowered right now.”
The voting period ended on Monday, Oct. 11, and results will be revealed this Friday.
