According to True Crime News, in Flagstaff, Arizona the sentencing of Anthony Jose Martinez 28 has brought closure to a tragic case that has deeply affected the community. Martinez received a life sentence for the first-degree murder of his 6-year-old son Deshaun Martinez whose shocking death unfolded on March 2, 2020. Responding to a distress call police found Deshaun unresponsive at Martinez’s residence. Despite efforts to revive him the severely malnourished child weighing a mere 18 pounds, tragically succumbed. Investigations uncovered a harrowing truth Deshaun and his 7-year-old brother had been confined to a bedroom closet without food for about a month. Martinez and Elizabeth Archibeque Deshaun’s mother who also received a life sentence admitted to authorities that they locked their children up after catching them sneaking out for food.

Anthony Martinez’s sentencing also included an additional 68 years for charges of child abuse and kidnapping stemming from the mistreatment inflicted on Deshaun and his surviving brother. The appalling conditions in which the children were kept drew comparisons from authorities to victims of concentration camps sparking widespread outrage and disbelief in Flagstaff. Ann Marie Martinez Deshaun’s grandmother faced legal consequences for her involvement in the abuse, pleading guilty to lesser charges and potentially facing significant prison time. The remaining children from the household are now under the care of the Department of Child Safety highlighting the tragic outcomes of severe neglect and abuse within a family.
