19-Year-Old Immigrant Release Stirs Debate

Attorney’s TikTok Video Draws Mixed Reactions

According to Fox News, the release of Virgilio Aguilar Mendez, a 19-year-old immigrant from Guatemala has caused a lot of talk and attention to his case. A 19-year-old immigrant was accused of killing a police officer named Sgt. Michael Kunovich during a fight last year. But the charges against him were dropped recently so he was let go from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody. Mendez’s lawyer Phillip Arroyo, shared a video of his release on TikTok which made some people happy and others worried about how Kunovich died and how the case was handled.

Language Barrier Raises Concerns

The conflict started when Sgt. Kunovich approached Aguilar Mendez suspecting him of a crime while he was speaking with his mother on the sidewalk. Aguilar Mendez a 19-year-old immigrant tried to leave leading to a confrontation. Questions arose about police use of force and ensuring a 19-year-old immigrant Aguilar Mendez understood as he didn’t speak English well. His lawyer Jose Baez, argues Aguilar Mendez was confused due to language barriers. Recent experts and the 7th District State Attorney’s Office acknowledge significant issues in the case highlighting challenges in legal proceedings involving immigrants.
