The Camp Logan Mutiny: A Haunting Legacy

In an important turn of events, the U.S. Army has undone the wrong convictions of more than 100 Black troops who were involved in the notorious Camp Logan Mutiny in 1917. This long-overdue justice was led by Jason Holt, a passionate New Jersey lawyer and grandson of one of the soldiers. His unwavering efforts have sped up the process of fixing a 100-year-old injustice.

People in the all-Black Third Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, were charged with mutiny after a fight with Houston residents during the Camp Logan Mutiny, which was marked by racial violence. Shockingly, the soldiers were put through cases that were full of racial bias, and 19 of them were eventually put to death. One of the people unfairly sentenced to death was Pfc. Thomas Coleman Hawkins, who was Holt’s ancestor. This shows how badly these brave soldiers were treated.

In a strong clemency plea, Holt, historian, and author John Haymond, and legal scholar Dru Brenner-Beck carefully explained how the soldiers were denied due process and other basic rights. This set the stage for their rightful release. Because they were so determined, the Army eventually changed the soldiers’ records to show they had been honorably discharged. This restored their good reputations.

The end of this historic journey is a resounding win for justice and a moving reminder of how strong and resilient these soldiers were, even in the face of unimaginable hardship. Now that the shadows of wrong are gone, these men, who were once silenced, can stand tall and be proud of their bravery and sacrifice.
