Tragedy Strikes Smith State Prison: Correctional Officer Robert Clark Fatally Attacked by Inmate

Tragedy struck Smith State Prison in Glennville, Georgia, as Correctional Officer Robert Clark, aged 42, lost his life in a brutal attack by an inmate. According to the reports, Officer Clark, who was in his first year of service, was escorting two offenders from a dining hall on Sunday, October 1st, when he was ambushed from behind by Layton Lester, one of the inmates.

Lester wielded a “homemade weapon” during the assault, according to officials, leaving Officer Clark severely injured. Another inmate in Smith State Prison who intervened to aid Officer Clark also fell victim to the attack. Both Officer Clark and the assisting inmate were immediately transported to a hospital. Tragically, Officer Clark succumbed to his injuries and passed away, marking a somber day for the Georgia Department of Corrections.

Smith State Prison Tragedy: Georgia Department of Corrections Mourns Officer Clark’s Loss and Promises Support

The Georgia Department of Corrections expressed their deep sorrow over the loss of the Smith State Prison’s Officer Clark in a heartfelt Facebook post. Commissioner Tyrone Oliver extended his condolences to Officer Clark’s family and friends, emphasizing their commitment to providing support throughout the challenging days, weeks, and months ahead.

The attack in Smith State Prison left the assisting inmate with non-life-threatening injuries, and he is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital. Layton Lester, the assailant, will face charges related to the assault and resulting death of Officer Clark, as well as the assault on the other inmate involved in the incident. Glennville, where this tragic event unfolded, is situated approximately 120 miles south of Augusta, Georgia.
