According to the reports, Officer Clark, who was in his first year of service, was escorting two offenders from a dining hall on Sunday, October 1st, when he was ambushed from behind by Layton Lester, one of the inmates.
Lester wielded a “homemade weapon” during the assault, according to officials, leaving Officer Clark severely injured. Another inmate in Smith State Prison who intervened to aid Officer Clark also fell victim to the attack. Both Officer Clark and the assisting inmate were immediately transported to a hospital. Tragically, Officer Clark succumbed to his injuries and passed away, marking a somber day for the Georgia Department of Corrections.
