Permanent Alimony in Florida Overhauled After Governor DeSantis Signs Bill

On June 26, Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida signed a bill into law that overhauled the permanent alimony in the state. The new legislation was expected to take effect yesterday, July 1, and intends to abolish permanent alimony in Florida.

Apart from abolishing the permanent alimony, an article in Benzinga states that the new legislation also intends to restrict its duration to up to 50% of the period of marriage and allow for changes in alimony payments in certain circumstances.

Opposition to the Abolishment of Permanent Alimony

However, according to an article in CBS News, the abolishment of the permanent alimony in Florida triggered controversy and debates in the state. Reports say critics argued that the move could have left female spouses, in particular, in a financial position that would be at risk. Jan Killilea, the founder of “First Wives Advocacy Group” a decade ago states that she believes abolishing the permanent alimony will place the older women in a vulnerable position.
