Bryan Kohberger’s DNA was reportedly a “statistical match” to the sample obtained from the sheath of the knife used during the Idaho student murders. Initially, the Federal Bureau of Investigation built family trees from the sample to identify the origin of the unknown DNA.

However, according to Ruiz, the genetic genealogy did not produce significant evidence which urged the FBI to use an STR analysis. This suggests that the DNA collected and the sample taken from the Idaho student murders suspect were put into comparison.
