The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is recently preparing to launch a program to offer a free online tax filing system in 2024. The IRS Pilot Program intends to make tax returns more accessible and profitable for taxpayers in the U.S.
On May 16, the new IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel and Chief Implementation Officer Laurel Blatchford of the Treasury’s announced that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is planning to launch a program in 2024. This IRS Pilot Program intends to evaluate a “direct file” system and assist the U.S. federal government in its decision to implement it in the future.An article in ABC News states that for nine months, the IRS has been studying whether American taxpayers prefer a free online tax filing system administered by the government. Advocates of the IRS Pilot Program claims that the initiative would make tax return services more accessible and profitable across the country.

Planning the IRS Pilot Program
According to Schulz, as part of the funds the IRS received from the Inflation Reduction Act, the agency was assigned to look into how to create a “direct file” system. The health care and climate measure signed by U.S. President Joe Biden gave the agency nine months and $15 million to study how the IRS Pilot Program will be implemented.
On May 16, the IRS released a feasibility report on how the IRS Pilot Program could work, its potential expenses, possible challenges during operation, and more. Furthermore, the report revealed that most of the taxpayers who were surveyed are interested in using the program.
