Gov. Shapiro’s Push For Expansion Of Tax And Rent Relief Program In Pennsylvania!

KYW News Radio reported that Gov. Shapiro of Pennsylvania has proposed an expansion of Pennsylvania’s rent relief program and property tax, which he announces on Monday at a senior center in Montgomery County.

Gov. Shapiro’s Proposal

Gov. Shapiro’s proposal will get rid of the separate income limit for renters and will raise homeowners’ and renters’ income limits to $45,000 from the original $35,000 for homeowners and $15,000 for renters.

The proposal will tie the annual income limit to inflation and increase the rebate from $650 to $1,000.

According to Gov. Shapiro, more than 10,000 residents of Montgomery County have relied on the program but sadly, it decreases every year because of the cost-of-living adjustments by Social Security push them over the income limit and inflation.

He added that it is a lifeline for seniors and every time that happens, more seniors will be kicked out of the program. In 17 years, the income limit hasn’t changed, but the cost of living has changed and risen.

Gov. Shapiro’s Expansion

Gov. Shapiro’s office expansion in the first year is estimated to have an additional cost of $139 million.

This expansion can help qualified residents to see their rebates nearly double in about 400,000 people while an estimated 175,00 Pennsylvanians will be qualified for the program.

On the other hand, the House Appropriations Minority Chairman Seth Grove has expressed concerns about trying the income limit to inflation.
