Serbia School Shooting Incident

The drive-by Serbia school shooting leads to the arrest of a 21-year-old man identified by the initials UB. He was arrested near the central Serbian town last Friday, 1o0 kilometers south of Belgrade. The shooting incident happened a day after a teen boy used his father’s guns to kill his eight fellow students and a guard at Belgrade school.

Mass shootings in Serbia are extremely rare though Serbia has a plentiful supply of weapons from the wars of the 1990s. The shooting incident on Wednesday was the first in the country’s modern history. Remarkably, the last mass shooting was in 2013 when a veteran of war killed 13 people in a village in central Serbia.

State media reported that Serbian Interior Minister Bratislav Gasic has called the shooting a terrorist attack.

Serbian students filled the streets around the school wearing black and carrying flowers, earlier on Thursday. They paid silent homage to the victims, laid flowers, left toys, and lit candles to commemorate the victims.

The incident also sparked a debate about the state of the nation after decades of conflicts and crises that created a state of permanent insecurity and instability.

The Government’s Take On Serbia School Shooting

Police urged the public to keep away their guns from their children and boosted gun control protocols.

The government has ordered a two-year moratorium on short-barrel guns, a tough control to people with guns and also in shooting grounds. Tougher sentences for people who let minor hold a gun was also ordered. Gun owners must be over 18 in Serbia, and must not have a criminal record.

Officials set up a helpline for people in coping with tragedies like this. Hundreds donated blood for the wounded and a three-day mourning period was done.
