The administration of U.S. President Biden declared to target those involved with illicit fentanyl smuggling from Mexico and China. On the same day, the Justice Department announced charges against more than 20 defendants including the three sons of “El Chapo”, the notorious drug lord.
On April 14, the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden has declared a series of actions that intended to target individuals who were involved with the illicit fentanyl smuggling into the U.S. from Mexico and chemicals imported from China. Consequently, on the same day, the U.S. Department of Justice announced criminal charges against 27 defendants including the three sons of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, the notorious drug lord.According to Charles, the criminal charges announced by the Justice Department are related to the illicit fentanyl smuggling worldwide. In addition, the U.S. Department of the Treasury also targets the individuals and companies that are associated to the sale and development of chemicals used in fentanyl. The U.S. Department of State also offers rewards for any information provided that will lead to the arrest or conviction of 27 defendants including the high-ranking members of the Sinaloa Cartel.

Deaths due to Fentanyl Smuggling
An article on CNN states that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that synthetic opioids, mainly those containing fentanyl, are the main cause of deaths due to overdose in the U.S. Reports say the overall numbers increased by 7.5% from 2015 to 2021. Furthermore, overdose is the third main cause of death in children and teens ages 19 and below.
