U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission To Consider Ban On Gas Stoves

Arguments have blown up this week as the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced its assessment to ban gas stoves. It is known that in December 2022, the U.S. CPSC also considered health regulations concerning the use of gas stoves.

According to Leber, the biggest concern of them all is nitrogen dioxide, the result of burning methane. Nitrogen dioxide causes respiratory and cardiovascular problems. This pollutant can cause inflammation in a person’s airways which may lead to asthma attacks. Research from decades ago discovered that when gas stoves and ovens are in use, nitrogen dioxide is at a high level. Shelly Miller, an indoor air quality scientist, also said that cooking is the leading method of home pollution.

Protests Against Gas Stove Ban

However, the announcement of the gas stove ban proposal prompted an immediate backlash. Around 40 million American households still prefer using gas stoves. According to the population, the U.S. CPSC can acquire better range hood systems to ensure emissions are being filtered out. They also suggested that stoves must be sold with ducted hood vents outside, as reported by Leber.
