FDA Sets Risk Level for Englewood Cannery Spaghetti Sauce Recall Over Undeclared Allergen


According to Newsweek , Tennessee-based Englewood Cannery has voluntarily recalled its Traditional Country Canning Spaghetti Sauce due to the presence of egg, an undeclared allergen, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced. This recall affects 240 units of the 16-ounce spaghetti sauce that were distributed in Alabama and Tennessee.

The product, which may cause allergic reactions in individuals sensitive to eggs, was recalled after the allergen was found in the sauce without being listed on the label. Egg is one of the nine major allergens that must be disclosed on food products sold in the U.S.

The FDA has classified this recall as Class II, which refers to situations where exposure to the violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible health consequences, or where the likelihood of serious adverse health consequences is remote.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled spaghetti sauce are urged to dispose of it or return it to the point of purchase for a full refund.

Eggs are one of the nine major allergens that must be listed on food labels in the U.S., along with milk, soybeans, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, and sesame. Failure to properly disclose allergens can lead to serious allergic reactions, such as hives, swelling, vomiting, or more severe symptoms like anaphylaxis, which can include difficulty breathing and loss of consciousness.

In the event of a suspected allergic reaction to a food product, experts advise seeking medical attention immediately to address symptoms. Individuals are also encouraged to notify the FDA and local health departments, which can help prevent further incidents.

Undeclared allergens remain one of the leading causes of food recalls in the U.S., with regulatory bodies like the FDA and the Food Safety and Inspection Service frequently issuing such recalls. Between 2020 and 2024, undeclared allergens accounted for 40% of all food recalls, according to a study by regulatory compliance firm Traceone.

Recently, other recalls due to undeclared allergens have also been issued, including chicken salad containing egg and bakery products containing sesame.
