Health Risk from Bird Flu Contamination

According to Newsweek , A statewide recall of raw milk and cream products has been issued across California due to the potential risk of contamination from the bird flu virus. The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) announced that all milk and cream products from Raw Farm, LLC have been voluntarily recalled after bird flu was detected in products, as well as at dairy storage and bottling sites.

This latest recall follows two earlier recalls of specific batches, and the affected products were found in various retail locations throughout California, as well as in Arizona, New Mexico, southern Nevada, Texas, and Utah. The products in question include a range of milk and cream items, such as vegetable and fruit trays, and those packaged with Tajin or other toppings. These items were produced between November 9 and November 27, 2024.

The recall comes amid a significant outbreak of avian influenza A(H5N1), also known as bird flu, which has been particularly prevalent in California. As of December 3, 31 human cases of H5N1 have been reported in the state. While no illnesses have been reported from the contaminated products, the public is urged to dispose of or return the recalled items for a full refund.

The CDPH emphasized that the risk stems from raw milk, which has not been pasteurized, a process that kills harmful bacteria and pathogens. Bird flu can be transmitted through raw milk from infected cows, and health officials caution against consuming any Raw Farm products, including cheese and kefir, or using their pet food toppers.

While there are claims that raw milk is healthier, public health agencies such as the FDA and CDC warn against drinking it due to the risk of foodborne illnesses. For safety, pasteurized milk remains free from bird flu and other harmful pathogens, and the CDPH continues to assure consumers that pasteurized milk is safe to drink.

As part of its response, California has placed Raw Farm under quarantine, halting the distribution of all products produced on or after November 27. Protective measures, including the distribution of gear to dairy workers, have also been put in place to minimize the risk of exposure.
