Juarez to Impose $200 Fines on Motorists for Line-Cutting at Border Crossings

Motorists who cut in line at the international bridges between El Paso, Texas, and Juarez could soon face fines exceeding $200, according to a new recommendation from the Public Safety Commission of the Juarez City Council. The proposal, which aims to address long-standing frustrations over border-crossing delays, would classify line-cutting as a misdemeanor offense and include penalties such as vehicle impounding for those who refuse to pay the fine. Additionally, the ordinance would offer discounts for early payment of fines.

The measure comes in response to the growing frustration of both U.S. and Juarez motorists, who face long wait times, particularly on the Paso del Norte International Bridge, where waits can exceed 75 minutes during peak hours. A major issue contributing to delays is vehicles cutting in line, especially on the Mexican access roads.

Juarez Mayor Cruz Perez Cuellar expressed support for the ordinance, emphasizing its necessity in the municipal traffic code. He acknowledged that while arrests were not necessary, the ordinance would help reduce disruptive behavior and enhance community satisfaction. “The community supports this measure, and I hope the council approves it,” Perez Cuellar said during a press conference.

As the holiday season approaches, officials are also addressing other concerns in Juarez, including unlicensed street dollar vendors. Mexican authorities are warning border shoppers to avoid dealing with these clandestine vendors after a man was arrested on money laundering charges for carrying a large sum of cash near a shopping center close to the U.S. consulate. The Juarez Chamber of Commerce has urged the public to use authorized money-exchange services to prevent potential scams and illegal activities.
