American Warship Intercepts Houthi Drone and Missile, Safeguarding Vital Shipping Route
In a significant development, the US Navy successfully intercepted a drone and anti-ship ballistic missile launched by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi militias in the Southern Red Sea. The thwarted attack, aimed at international shipping, highlights the ongoing threats posed by the Houthi rebels.
The USS MASON (DDG 87) played a pivotal role in neutralizing the imminent danger, shooting down both the drone and missile between 5:45 – 6:10 p.m. (Arabian Standard Time) on Dec. 28. This swift and decisive action averted any harm to the 18 ships operating in the area, preventing potential injuries and ensuring the safety of vital maritime transport.
The attempted assault is particularly concerning given its proximity to a transit route that facilitates up to 12 percent of global trade. The incident underscores the continued defiance of the Houthi militias, who persist in their aggressive activities despite international efforts to curtail their belligerent actions.
