Nauru’s Pivot to China Amidst U.S.-China Rivalry

President David Adeang’s Monday national speech reaffirmed Nauru’s desire to rebuild ties with China. Adeang said this was beneficial for the nation. This diplomatic change occurred immediately after Taiwan’s Vice President Lai Ching-te, a China skeptic, won the presidential election and secured the Democratic Progressive Party’s record third term.

Geopolitically, the U.S. and China are fighting for South Pacific dominance. China’s aggressive participation, including promises to support social programs and fight climate change, has appealed as the U.S. shifted its emphasis to other global objectives. The conflict is diplomatic and security-related, with both countries competing for regional ports and military facilities.
