Paula Abdul Files Lawsuit Against “American Idol” Producer Nigel Lythgoe
Nigel Lythgoe, executive producer of “American Idol” and “So You Think You Can Dance,” has been sued by Paula Abdul for several sexual assaults when she was a judge. The December 29 complaint claims sexual assault, abuse, harassment, gender violence, and negligence. Abdul says that defendant executives, agents, workers, and representatives taunted, bullied, and harassed him.
Lythgoe reportedly sexually abused Abdul in a hotel elevator during an early season of “American Idol” by touching her genitals and breasts and kissing her. Abdul told her representative but did nothing out of fear of getting sacked from the show. After being invited to Lythgoe’s house for dinner in 2014, Abdul allegedly threw himself on top of her and kissed her, saying they would make an “excellent power couple.”
Abdul alleges she saw Lythgoe sexually attack one of her assistants in April 2015, according to the complaint. Abdul said Lythgoe approached from behind, rubbed against the assistant, and groped her without permission.

Abdul claims these experiences caused him extreme mental turmoil, misery, dread, worry, humiliation, and shame. The musician didn’t report the occurrences sooner out of fear of reprisal and contract restrictions on revealing secret business information.
California’s Sexual Abuse and Cover-Up Accountability Act authorizes sexual assault cases after the statute of limitations until December 31, 2023. Abdul and Lythgoe have not replied to calls for comment.
