SpaceX’s Starship rocket comes close to reaching orbit in its second test flight, facing a notable setback due to a liquid oxygen venting issue.

SpaceX’s massive Starship rocket, in its second-ever test flight on November 18, 2023, neared its goal of reaching orbit before encountering a dramatic mishap. Despite promising performance during the mission, an explosion caused by a venting of excess liquid oxygen thwarted its ambitions. The revelation came during a company update from SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk, claiming that the absence of payload led to the oxygen surplus, underscoring the near success of the mission.

The second test launch from SpaceX’s Starbase site in South Texas initially displayed significant potential, sparking optimism for the ambitious project. Elon Musk affirmed the near-orbital success of Flight 2, projecting a positive trajectory for future missions. This setback, along with the successful operation of Starship’s first-stage booster called Super Heavy and the Starship upper stage, underscores the pioneering aim of fully reusable spacefaring elements.

SpaceX’s plans for the next stages of Starship’s development include Flight 3 and the rapid pursuit of full reusability. Despite the setback, Musk aims for a swift advancement toward operational capability, with an eye on initiating the launch of next-generation Starlink internet satellites aboard Starship by the year’s end.
