Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s hospitalization since New Year’s Day was disclosed by the Pentagon late on Friday, much to the surprise of the press and national security establishment. As of yet, neither the nature of Austin’s illness nor the reason for his planned departure from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center is understood. A Pentagon revelations have shed light on the enigmatic circumstances surrounding Austin’s hospitalization.

Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder, Pentagon spokesman, said Austin had an elective treatment on December 22 while on leave. Despite coming home the next day and working remotely over the holidays, the Pentagon did not alert the White House of Austin’s procedure. On January 1, Austin was rushed by EMS to Walter Reed from home due to extreme pain. He was conscious but in agony, undergoing tests and handing some authority to Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks on medical recommendation upon admittance. Senior officials learned about Austin’s illness on January 2.

After this incident, Pentagon spokesperson Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder said “No time was national security in jeopardy,” and Austin was “capable of executing his duties as the Secretary of Defense” despite significant pain. CNN has begun to shed light on Austin’s illness and the delay in disclosing it to high officials.
