Key Provisions of President Biden’s AI Executive Order Address National Security and Safety

According to source, United States President Joe Biden has issued a comprehensive executive order to regulate the development of artificial intelligence (AI) due to concerns about its potential impact on various aspects including threats to national security and public health.

The order includes a requirement for developers of powerful AI models to share safety results and information with the government to mitigate threats to national security. Additionally it calls for the establishment of rigorous standards for AI testing by the National Institute of Standards and Technology to address threats to national security guidelines for identifying AI-generated content by the Department of Commerce and new standards for biological synthesis screening in life science projects to prevent AI from engineering biohazards that could pose threats to national security.

Biden’s executive order also addresses data privacy legislation, calling on Congress to pass such legislation to protect against threats to national security, and urges the Department of Justice to tackle “algorithmic discrimination” among landlords and federal benefits programs to safeguard against potential threats to national security.

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Bruce Reed describes these measures as the “strongest set of actions any government in the world has ever taken on AI safety, security, and trust,” highlighting the administration’s commitment to harnessing the benefits of AI while mitigating threats to national security.

Concerns regarding AI’s risks have escalated, particularly following the release of Open AI’s ChatGPT, which revealed the powerful capabilities of AI and caught regulators and government officials around the world off guard, raising concerns about threats to national security.
