Sanctions focus on businesses connected to Ashot Mkrtychev, previously targeted for arms deals between Russia and North Korea.

A recent article from The Hill highlights the Biden administration’s strong response, as they’ve taken action to impose sanctions on three distinct businesses involved in a covert operation. The operation’s goal was to transfer weapons from North Korea to Russia, raising significant concerns due to Russia’s role in the ongoing Ukrainian conflict.

These sanctions have been specifically targeted at three businesses associated with Ashot Mkrtychev, a Slovakian national. Notably, Mkrtychev had previously faced U.S. sanctions in March for his part in arranging arms deals between Russia and North Korea.

According to allegations by the U.S. Treasury Department, Mkrtychev collaborated with DPRK officials in an effort to secure more than twenty-five different types of weapons and munitions for Russia. This endeavor involved offering a range of commodities, including commercial aircraft, raw materials, and other resources required by North Korea.

Enhanced Relations Amid Global Pariah Status

Russia and North Korea, two nations facing international isolation due to their controversial actions, have embarked on a path to strengthen their ties despite their pariah status on the global stage. Russia’s engagement in the Ukrainian conflict has drawn widespread condemnation, while North Korea’s illicit nuclear weapons program and human rights violations have further exacerbated its international standing.

Recent developments indicate a potential shift in their relationship. North Korean state media reported this week that Kim Jong Un, the country’s leader, and Russian President Vladimir Putin engaged in a letter exchange. In these letters, Kim emphasized the need to foster and solidify a “long-standing strategic relationship” between the Russia and North Korea. This unexpected correspondence points towards the possibility of a deeper alliance between Russia and North Korea despite their controversial reputations.
