The Southern Scandal’s Location Explained

According to an article from Screen Rant, in June 2021, the tragic Murdaugh murders took place in the relatively unknown town of Islandton, South Carolina. This unsettling incident began with Alex Murdaugh’s distressing 911 call, reporting the fatal shooting of his wife and son, Maggie and Paul. The ensuing Southern scandal triggered a highly publicized criminal investigation and trial, which are prominently featured in the Netflix true-crime series, “Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal.”

Beyond simply unraveling the heinous crimes, the docuseries delves into the profound impact of the Southern scandal on a prominent Southern family. However, despite the series’ comprehensive coverage, many viewers remain unfamiliar with the remote location of Islandton. As of 2020, this community had a mere 49 residents and is situated just an 18-minute drive from Hampton, South Carolina. Islandton is located approximately an hour and a half to the west of Charleston, South Carolina, and an hour to the north of Savannah, Georgia.

Notably, the Murdaugh family had deep-seated ties to this area, with a longstanding legal legacy and influential roles in South Carolina’s 14th Judicial district. The wealth and local prominence of the Murdaughs contributed significantly to the widespread attention garnered by the Southern scandal.

What Really Happened on June 2021?

According to DMT, in the midst of the Southern scandal, Alex initially claimed that someone had broken into his property and murdered his family, but this theory was ruled out. Investigators believed that two different guns were used to create the impression of two perpetrators.
The manner of the murders indicated it wasn’t organized crime. The theory of drug trafficking involvement was also dismissed due to the messy crime scene. Alex’s alibi fell apart when a caretaker testified that he was at the crime scene around the time of the murders, contrary to his claims.
Accessing his son’s phone revealed a video with the voices of both Maggie and Alex, proving he was present during the murders. Alex admitted lying about being at the scene but continued to deny committing the murders within the context of The Southern Scandal.
Henceafter, in the Southern scandal, Alex Murdough is the likely perpetrator of the double murders, driven by a desire to protect the family’s reputation from his son Paul’s actions. He received two consecutive life sentences in March 2023. Despite his claims of innocence, some believe there could have been an accomplice, but the details remain uncertain. Further investigation or a new season may shed more light on the Southern scandal.
