Nicolás Petro was arrested after his ex-wife accused him of money laundering worth $150,000. Reports say the Colombian President’s son received the donation from a politician who was convicted of drug trafficking.
On July 29, the son of Colombian President Gustavo Petro, Nicolás Petro, 32, was arrested after the latter’s former wife, Daysuris del Carmen Vasquez, accused him of money laundering. Del Carmen Vasquez claimed that the Colombian President’s son received a donation worth $150,000 from a politician who was convicted of drug trafficking. Reports say the money was used for Gustavo’s presidential campaign which was won in 2022.However, according to Goldsberry, the Colombian President’s son denied the allegations from del Carmen Vasquez who was also taken into the custody of the Police of Colombia. Nonetheless, del Carmen Vasquez stated that the President was not aware of his son’s transactions despite donors being promised campaign support.
Colombian President’s Son’s Commitment To Anti-Corruption
According to Pozzebon, Gustavo campaigned on anti-corruption policies and was Colombia’s first leftist president. However, despite the Colombian President’s son’s commitment to his father’s campaign, Gustavo vowed that he would not intervene in the investigation. Instead, the President believes that the ordeal will allow his son to reflect on his mistakes.
