Why Kyle Fitzsimons Ended Sergeant’s Career?

Kyle Fitzsimons engaged in five separate assaults within 10 minutes during the riot, leading to his conviction on 11 charges, including seven felonies.

During the chaos, Kyle Fitzsimons threw an unstrung bow at a group of officers, striking one officer’s helmet. He also attempted to drag a fallen officer into the mob, but when Sergeant Gonell intervened to protect the injured officer, Kyle Fitzsimons grappled with him, causing a permanent shoulder injury. Additionally, Kyle Fitzsimons aggressively charged at groups of officers, wildly swinging his fists. Upon leaving the Capitol grounds, he encouraged others to join in the fight against the police.

The consequences of Kyle Fitzsimons’ actions were severe. Sergeant Gonell required surgery due to the injuries sustained during the attack. Despite having served in the Iraq War, Gonell admitted that it was during the riot that he genuinely feared for his life. In his victim impact statement, Gonell expressed how Kyle Fitzsimons had ended his law enforcement career, preventing him from continuing the job he loved and hindering his chances of promotion.

Kyle Fitzsimons’ sentencing occurred in the presence of Sergeant Gonell, who requested that the maximum sentence be imposed. Kyle Fitzsimons wore a white butcher’s coat and was visibly bloodied from another rioter’s attack when images of him circulated widely.
