A lawsuit has been filed against the owners and operators of four New York nursing homes, alleging the misappropriation of over US$83 million in government funds and the neglect of residents.
Four New York Nursing Homes Faces Lawsuit
The four New York nursing homes that were named in the lawsuit include the Martine Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in Westchester County, Beth Abraham Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in the Bronx, the Holliswood Center for Rehabilitation and Healthcare in Queens, and the Buffalo Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing, CTV News reported.
The state Attorney General, Letitia James, brought the lawsuit forward, claiming that the operators of Centers Health Care misused Medicaid and Medicare funds for personal enrichment rather than providing adequate care for the residents.
During a news conference, Attorney General Letitia James stated that residents suffered from malnourishment and were often left unattended by the New York nursing homes for extended periods, sometimes sitting in their own urine and feces.
The suit alleges that the residents endured dangerous falls resulting in broken bones due to being left alone and unsupervised. The New York nursing home environment was described as squalid, with neglected food trays, vermin, and the stench of human waste pervading the facilities.

New York Nursing Homes Allegedly Mistreats Residents
The lawsuit further accuses the New York nursing homes of understaffing, which contributed to the neglect and mistreatment of residents.
The lawsuit includes claims that residents’ meals were consistently late, their clothing was stolen, and their calls for assistance went unanswered. Shockingly, one resident developed sepsis from severe bed sores, leading to hospitalization and eventual death.
Centers Health Care, the company responsible for operating the New York nursing homes, vehemently denied the allegations. Spokesperson Jeff Jacomowitz defended the company’s commitment to patient care and stated that Centers denies the allegations wholeheartedly. He further mentioned that the company attempted to resolve the matter out of court but will now fight the claims with supporting evidence.
In addition to the allegations of mistreatment, the lawsuit claims that the New York nursing homes failed to adequately control the spread of COVID-19 when the pandemic struck. According to Attorney General Letitia James, over 400 residents across the four homes died in 2020.
The lawsuit specifically targets New York nursing home Centers Health Care co-owners Kenneth Rozenberg and Daryl Hagler, as well as several businesses owned by them, their family members, or their business associates.
