Millions of Americans might soon receive a $500 Georgia tax refund. According to Governor Brian Kemp, the one-time direct payouts would be funded with $1 billion of the state’s $6.6 billion budget surplus.

As the state gets ready to send out another batch of checks, the Georgia Department of Revenue shared to 11Alive some of the biggest myths surrounding Georgia tax refunds.
Usha Rackliffe of Emory University’s Goizueta Business School pointed out many things that might affect the amount on your check.
What you pay in taxes to the state is shown on line 16 of your state income tax form. If you paid less in state taxes than that, you may be eligible for a special tax refund, but it won’t be more than $250.
According to the Department of Revenue, similar circumstances might also reduce your return check if you owe child support or have previously defaulted on your state tax obligations.

See Who Qualifies For May Tax Rebates
Georgia residents with an income tax liability are eligible for the Georgia tax refund.
Individual filers would be entitled to $250, heads of household to $375, and couples to $500.
You can only get what you owed in taxes in the past.
The reimbursement is not available to nonresidents who reside in the state or to those who are claimed as dependents.
Depending on the preferences they indicate on their 2022 tax return, residents will either receive a direct deposit or a check.
Austin Gibbons, director of external affairs and communications for the Georgia Department of Revenue, told The US Sun that the state currently needs more precise payment dates.
