Breaking News: President Biden Expands Healthcare Coverage to DACA Recipients

President Joe Biden has expanded healthcare coverage to young adults protected by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, allowing them to apply for medical assistance through Medicaid or the Affordable Care Act. The new policy will expand the definition of “lawful presence” to include DACA recipients, providing them access to healthcare coverage for the first time since DACA was created in 2012.

President Biden’s Healthcare Initiative for DACA Recipients

US President Joe Biden has announced a new healthcare initiative to provide relief to DACA recipients, allowing them to apply for medical assistance through Medicaid or the Affordable Care Act. This decision is part of the Biden administration’s commitment to expanding opportunities for immigrants in the United States. DACA recipients will have access to reliable healthcare coverage for the first time since 2012.

The United We Dream organization, the largest immigrant youth-led organization in America, has welcomed the president’s announcement. The group’s Deputy Director of Federal Advocacy has described the decision as a win for Dreamers, stating that good, reliable healthcare is a human need and the rule change will mean more people will have access to the life-saving coverage they need. The new healthcare policy will provide relief to thousands of DACA recipients who have struggled to access healthcare coverage in the past, as reported by Tell Me Best.

The healthcare initiative is not part of the DACA program, but it will allow DACA recipients to apply for medical assistance through Medicaid or the Affordable Care Act. Although DACA recipients can temporarily leave the US for specific reasons such as education, employment, or humanitarian purposes, they were not previously eligible for healthcare coverage. The new policy is expected to have a significant impact on the lives of DACA recipients.
