Breaking News: 2023 US Tax Season is Here, but Hold Your Breath for Refunds as IRS Warns of Delays and Processing Errors!

The 2023 tax season in the United States officially began on January 23. However, according to the official website of the IRS, on January 24, 2023, citizens were able to start filing their 2022 tax returns through the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) Free File before this date. It’s important to note that the IRS is not expected to process any of these returns before the official start of tax season.

Following a published report by MARCA on February 16, 2023, the IRS has informed taxpayers that the majority of electronically filed tax refunds are processed and issued within three weeks. They also explained that refunds are usually issued within 21 days for taxpayers who file electronically and choose direct deposit. However, some returns may take longer to process due to errors or the need for more review. Therefore, taxpayers should not rely on getting a refund by a certain date.

To check the status of their refund, taxpayers who file a paper return need to wait four weeks. However, those who file electronically can check the status after 24 hours by accessing the Where’s My Refund? Tool on IRS.gov. Taxpayers can also call the IRS or visit a Taxpayer Assistance Center to check their refund status, but only if it has been 21 days or more since they filed electronically or 6 weeks or more since they mailed their return, according to the IRS.

It’s Important to note that the IRS updates refund statuses only once a day, usually between midnight and 6:00 a.m. Taxpayers should not check the website multiple times if their status has already been updated that day.
