Despite the federal minimum wage remaining stagnant at $7.25 an hour since 2009, there are more than 20 U.S. states increasing minimum wage in 2023. Starting in January, 23 states, along with Washington, D.C., have increased their minimum wages. The state governments decided to start launching their own increases in minimum wages due to the federal government’s period of inactivity.According to Malinsky, the states increasing minimum wage in 2023 depend on the state, ranging from $9.95 an hour in Montana to $16.10 an hour in Washington D.C. By the end of 2023, another 4 U.S. states are set to increase their minimum wages.

Biggest and Smallest Increase in Minimum Wage
An article on NPR states that last November, the voters in Nebraska decided to increase the state’s minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2026. This means that the increments will be $1.50 each year, with the minimum wage increasing to $10.50 per hour this year.
On the other hand, Michigan’s first increase in minimum wage became effective in January. Reportedly, the minimum wage in the state increased only by $0.23 for $10.10. Fortunately, there is a chance that a second increase could boost the minimum wage more to $13.03.
Highest Minimum Wage
In November 2022, voters in the District of Columbia decided to eliminate the tipped minimum wage to equal the $16.10 an hour for employees. In addition, the state of Washington has its minimum wage increased by $1.25 for $15.74. The city of Seattle in Washington also had its minimum wage increased by $0.75 for small business employees and by $1.42 for large business employees.
