Chicago Migrants Vacate Chicago Parks: Transitioning Back to Community Spaces

Resuming Regular Operations After Hosting Migrants

According to CBS News, in Chicago two parks used as temporary homes for Chicago migrants are now empty. Piotrowski Park in Little Village and Leone Beach Park in Rogers Park were home to nearly 200 Chicago migrants for almost a year. Now, Chicago migrants are back to being regular parks part of getting them ready for summer.

22nd Ward Alderman Mike Rodriguez talked about how the shelters at Piotrowski Park were only meant to be temporary. Now that Chicago migrants have moved to other shelters, the focus is on bringing back important programs and services for locals. Rodriguez hopes the parks will be vibrant again offering fun and activities for everyone in the community. While three parks still shelter Chicago migrants, Chicago is working to find them more permanent housing. The city wants both migrants and longtime residents to enjoy the parks fully. They believe public spaces should benefit everyone no matter where they come from or how long they’ve been there.
