Homeowners and Renters: Use Online Tools and Direct Deposit for Fastest Refunds
According to KROXAM, the Minnesota Department of Revenue is reminding both homeowners and renters to apply for their 2022 Property Tax Refunds by August 15, 2024. Renters who have already filed their claims are starting to receive their refunds and homeowners will begin getting theirs by late August. So far more than 987,000 people in Minnesota have filed for refunds for 2022 with nearly $900 million already distributed. Homeowners have received an average of $1,465 while renters have received about $964.
To ensure a smooth filing process check if you qualify for a refund on the Department of Revenue’s website. Homeowners can file for free using the department’s online system. Renters can file either through tax software or on paper. Renters must include their Certificate of Rent Paid and homeowners should use their property tax statements. For the fastest and safest refund, choose direct deposit.

New Renter’s Credit Filing Process Begins Next Year; Seniors Can Apply Refunds to Loan Balances
Starting next year renters will need to claim the Renter’s Credit when they file their 2024 Minnesota Individual Income Tax Return. They will need to provide their Certificate of Rent Paid at that time. Seniors who are part of the Senior Citizens’ Property Tax Deferral Program can apply their property tax refund to their existing loan balance. The Department of Revenue is working to review and process each return carefully to ensure everything is correct.
