Understanding the Lifespan of Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance Benefits: A Guide for Children and Spouses of Veterans

Did you know that the Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance Program provides educational benefits to children and spouses of veterans who were injured or died during their military service? Understanding the length of these benefits is crucial for planning your educational goals.

Length of Benefits for Children:

  • Children of eligible veterans can use benefits for education and training from 18 to 26 years old.
  • If they choose to serve in the military first, benefits can start earlier or last longer.

Length of Benefits for Spouses:

  • Spouses can use benefits for 10 years from their eligibility date or from their spouse’s death.
  • If the veteran was injured within three years of leaving the military spouses can use benefits for 20 years starting from October 10, 2008.
  • Surviving spouses of service members who died on active duty can use benefits for 20 years from the date of death.

To Qualify:

To qualify, individuals must be a child or spouse of a veteran permanently disabled or killed due to military service.

How to Apply:

To apply, fill out a form on the VA’s website using VONAPP. The VA will send a letter stating eligibility within 4-6 weeks. Give this letter to your school’s certifying official. If transferring schools, complete another form to notify the official, according to the report of Marca.
