The city plans to provide prepaid debit cards with $320 each to a thousand residents of West Oakland. Eligibility includes individuals living or working in West Oakland earning below the area’s median income of $103,500, a criteria that even encompasses some with six-figure salaries. This initiative aims to ease transportation costs and promote sustainable options like BART, AC Transit, and bike/scooter services, according to the report of Los Angeles Times.

Building on a successful 2021 effort in East Oakland, where 500 residents received up to $150 in prepaid cards and the city observed significant changes in travel behavior. Reports indicate 40% of participants altered their travel habits, with a notable 23% reduction in solo driving. With a total budget of $400,000, Oakland underscores its commitment to reducing reliance on cars and minimizing road wear.

Josh Rowan from Oakland’s Department of Transportation highlighted the initiative’s environmental benefits and its role in enhancing community mobility. He pointed out that many West Oakland residents struggle with transportation costs, and this program aims to foster sustainable urban transport practices.
